What to wear when the weather makes no sense
Stop Dressing for 8am.
I know this time of year is just…. confusing. You’re getting dressed for the early hours (usually the coldest one), and then living an entirely different day.
Spring is not a single temperature. It’s a range. And if you don’t account for that 30-degree shift (hello Pittsburgh), your outfit will always feel slightly off—even if it’s technically “cute.”
Transitional dressing is about learning how to bridge that gap with intention—so your outfits feel aligned with the season, even when the weather isn’t.
(I’ve linked outfits that are perfect for this time of year below)
In order to dress for your whole day, you want to thinkabout your outfit in three parts:
Morning (cold)
Midday (warmer)
Evening (cool again, but you still want to feel put together)
Most people dress for the morning… and then spend the rest of the day adjusting and overheating.
Instead, build your outfit like this:
Choose a base that works when it’s warm
This is what you’d want to be wearing at 2pm. A tee, a tank, a lightweight blouse, a simple dress. Something that feels comfortable even without layers.
Incorporate footwear that shifts the season
One of the easiest ways to signal spring is through your shoes. Start swapping heavy winter boots for loafers, flats, sneakers, or a simple pump. Even if the rest of your outfit leans winter, this small shift instantly lightens the overall feel.
Play with color
You don’t have to jump into brights, but start softening your palette. A lighter tone, a subtle pastel, even just a fresh accessory can shift the entire outfit.
Lighten up your basics
Swap dark bottoms for cream, ivory, or soft beige. A lighter pant or skirt instantly brightens your look while still feeling polished and grounded.
Adjust instead of overhaul
If it’s still cold where you are, don’t force it. Try a cream or nude boot instead of a full shoe swap—you’ll get that visual lightness while staying practical.
Transitional dressing isn't about completely changing your wardrobe overnight—it's about making thoughtful adjustments that reflect both the season and your environment through small shifts.
